The Landforms of Ineia

Impressive geological wonders

One of the most impressive natural attractions of Ineia is the imposing geomorphological formations, such as Konnefti, Gerakoptera, Alykou and Koraki (Koratzii), which constitute an important bird habitat. Until the late 20th century, griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) existed in these unique geophysical points, which, unfortunately, have almost disappeared. Today, corvids predominate, such as crows (Corvus monedula), wild pigeons (Columba livia), various birds of prey, such as peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), kittiwakes (Falco tinnunculus), white-tailed eagles (Tyto alba), etc.

The eponymous geomorphologies of Ineia are particularly imposing in the landscape and are surrounded by wild vegetation as well as rich bird and reptile fauna. These rocks, as well as the rest of the rocks of the Vouni hill, are quartz sandstones and have the same composition and age, that is, between 210-95 million years.

These formations are a major destination for professional and amateur rock climbers.

Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival

In recent years, a three-day climbing festival has even been established in the village with visitors from many countries. The Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival includes, in addition to climbing the impressive landforms of the area, many outdoor experiences. The Climbing Festival is held on the three impressive rocks in the Ineia area, Gerakopetra, Alykou and Koraki. These are rocks with different degrees of difficulty, with Gerakopetra as a vertical rock suitable mainly for professionals, while Alykou as a medium-level rock for amateurs and Koraki is for beginners and children.
